Creating a writing test - writing/tuhituhi prompts

For the latest instructions using the upgraded e-asTTle tool, visit e-asTTle - Creating and managing tests on Tāhūrangi.

Test Details

  1. Select "Create New Test" from the left menu.
  2. Select "Create Writing/Tuhituhi Prompt".
  3. Enter a "Test Name" of up to 20 characters. Be specific! Naming conventions make it much easier to find the test later. Students will see this name when they sit the test.
  4. If you would like, enter a "Description". This is helpful in telling tests apart. Tick the check-box if students should see the description.
  5. Use the "Subject" drop-down to select "Writing" or "Tuhituhi". Click "Continue".

Purpose and Attitude

  1. Drag the sliders to select one "Purpose".
  2. If you are creating a Writing Test, use the drop-down to select the Attitude Domain.
  3. Select "Continue".

Prompts

  1. Select the radio button next to the prompt that you want in your test. You can select the thumbnail next to the prompt name to generate a sample of each prompt.
  2. Select "Continue".

Review and Create Test

  1. Check through the summary of choices you made for the test.
  2. If needed, go back and adjust settings by selecting the link next to the step number.
  3. Select "Create Test".

Evaluate and Accept Test

Once your test is created, it will say "Pending" next to the test name. You can view, revise, accept, edit or delete a pending test. After you "accept" your test you will be able to assign it.

Print Test

  • By default, when you view a Writing test, the "prompt pack’" will  include:
  • Administration instructions
  • The prompt
  • Response booklet
  • Marking rubric
  • Structure and language notes
  • Annotated exemplars for the prompt (specific exemplars)
  • Glossary and definitions

While all prompts have a coloured thumbnail image, not every prompt has an image intended to go with the test. For example, in The Market prompt, there is an image for students to describe. In The Day Things Started Disappearing there is intentionally no image.

Print Options

Use Print Options to select the components of the test that you would like to be printed.

You can also print the generic exemplars from the Print Options screen. These are exemplars of different levels and from different purposes and prompts.

They are used to support the scoring process, especially when the specific exemplars do not provide rubric levels to compare against.
